Victims report cybercrime losses of $6.9 billion in 2021

The FBI's Internet Crime Report for 2021 contains statistics from 847,376 complaints, corresponding to more than $6.9 billion in losses. That represents a 7% increase from 2020.

Business email compromise (BEC) attacks are responsible for an outsized share of these losses — about $2.4 billion. These attacks typically involve no malware at all, just a convincing social engineering email that tricks victims into transferring money or sensitive information to the criminals in question. The classical fake tech support scams were still active as well, generating about $348 millions in losses.

Acronis' Advanced Email Security pack provides protection against all different types of email-borne threats, ensuring that malicious messages never reach users' inboxes.
