Ransomware derails Italian train operations

The latest in a string of ransomware attacks has hit the computer systems of Italian railway operator Trenitalia, causing disruptions to ticket purchasing as well as the tablets and applications used by onboard staff members.

While the specific ransomware used in this attack has not been named, its operators have demanded a ransom of $5 million in Bitcoin. They've issued an ultimatum that the amount will double to $10 million if not paid within three days.

The attack has also affected regional railway company Trenord, which has a ticketing system connected to Trenitalia's system. Trenord has able to limit the impact and continue normal operations by blocking affected ticket sales.
