Publishing giant Macmillan hit by cyberattack

The U.S. offices of Macmillan, a publishing company with an annual revenue of over $500 million, have been hit by a cyberattack. Macmillan editors have lost access to their systems, emails and files, while book retailers nationwide were left unable to place new orders from the publisher.

This attack occurred last week, and caused the company to shut down all of its IT systems. Reports indicate that it also impacted Macmillan's U.K. operations.

The use of encryption in the attack suggests that it was a ransomware attack. However, it is not known what ransomware gang might be behind the attack, or whether data was stolen.

The Active Protection included in Acronis Cyber Protect detects and blocks ransomware, keeping your data safe from encryption or extortion.
