The electronics retailer MediaMarkt and some of the Saturn stores have been hit by Hive ransomware, forcing affected outlets to disable payment terminals.
MediaMarkt is a high-value target for cybercriminals, with over 1,000 shops across 13 European countries, and more than 53,000 employees. The company reported revenue of over 20 billion Euros last year. Stores in the Netherlands, Germany, Luxenbourg, Belgium, Austria, and Switzerland were impacted in this attack.
The Hive ransomware page indicates an initial ransom demand of $240 million to be paid in Bitcoin, but other reports suggest a figure of $50 million after some initial negotiation.
