Bangkok Airways hit by ransomware, 200 GB of data leaked

Bangkok Airways, which employees more than 3,000 people in 11 countries and has an annual revenue of over $685 million, has announced that they were the victim of a ransomware attack. The LockBit extortion gang is claiming responsibility.

LockBit has risen quickly among ransomware operators, but has received some criticism for reneging on threats to release data and pushing back deadlines. Most famously, they threatened to release as much as 6 TB of data obtained from Accenture, but pushed back the deadline several times before Accenture came forward to state that no significant data had been accessed.

Following this latest attack, LockBit claims to have published 200 GB of Bangkok Airways data to a legitimate file-sharing service. The airline has confirmed that the stolen data includes the full names and nationalities of passengers, their gender, phone numbers, email addresses, passport information, and other sensitive data.

The Active Protection included in Acronis Cyber Protect detects and blocks LockBit and other forms of ransomware based on the malicious behaviors they exhibit, keeping your sensitive data private and safe from harm.
