Supercell storm causes chaos, disables infrastructure in Ontario

A supercell storm has caused chaos in the southern part of the Canadian province of Ontario. Heavy rain and large hailstones were dropped across the area, which also saw lightning, high winds, and even a tornado that touched down at 4:05 a.m.

Despite the imposing presence of the tornado, the primary threats to the region were actually the high winds and lightning strikes. Falling trees took out power lines and damaged buildings. More than 27,000 residents were left without power.

While events like tornados, hurricanes, earthquakes dominate the news cycles, thunderstorms can cause just as much harm to infrastructure — and do so more frequently.
