The major fuel supplier Oiltanking GmbH, which supplies gasoline to 26 companies across Germany — including Shell and 1,995 of their gasoline stations — from its 13 tank farms, has fallen victim of a cyberattack.
The group responsible for the attack, as well as the nature of the attack, have not yet been released. However, it is suspected that this was likely a ransomware attack, possibly at the hands of the nation-state threat group commonly known as APT27 or Emissary Panda.
Oiltanking learned of the incident on January 29th, and immediately took the affected systems offline while launching an investigation into the attack. Some of the affected systems control tank loading and unloading automation; without a manual fallback option in place, this may lead to supply chain issues if the problem is not resolved quickly.
