University of Aberdeen Rapidly Improves Technology Replacement Programme

LONDON, UK - xx February 2010 - University of Aberdeen, the 'global university of the north', has announced that it has halved the time taken to deploy a single PC. By installing Acronis Snap Deploy for Workstation it has saved ten weeks worth of IT deployment each year.

The University's Service Delivery Division is responsible for the installation and management of over 250 software applications on 1700 publicly accessible PCs across various campuses. The team needs to install new software applications and updates for existing ones on an annual basis.

Using early imaging products, the team was faced with a 4GB size restriction on the master image deployed on all PCs. With software upgrades leading to an increase of data size and with new software solutions appearing all the time, the team spent many man-hours trying to prioritise software to go on the master image and to find solutions that could work over a network instead.

Acronis Snap Deploy 3.0 allows the team to create a master image containing the operating system, settings and all the applications required, without a size restriction, and place it on the 1700 PCs that they maintain. This saves the Service Delivery Division many man-hours.

In addition, each year the University replaces roughly 25% of existing PCs with new ones as part of the technology replacement programme. The team relies on Acronis to help them get these machines up and running as quickly as possible so there is very little downtime.

Derek Findlay, Computing Support Office, University of Aberdeen, concludes: "Acronis Snap Deploy is very cost effective and easy to use. The additional functionality it has to offer makes it a clear winner. In addition the Acronis support team was really helpful during the development phase, helping us utilise and configure the product for the University's specific needs."
