AV-TEST is known for its comprehensive and impartial assessments of anti-malware solutions. For this evaluation, Acronis commissioned AV-TEST to assess Acronis True Image using their standard methodology for certification tests in two critical categories: Protection and Usability.
In the Protection category, AV-TEST assessed Acronis True Image’s ability to shield systems from current and widespread malware threats. This category featured two distinct tests:
Real-World Test: Evaluated Acronis True Image against 201 malicious URLs and email attachments. These attacks mimick the kinds of attacks users face daily, such as phishing emails or compromised websites accessed via a browser or email client. Acronis True Image blocked 99.34% of threats, showcasing its robust real-time detection and defense capabilities.
Prevalent Malware Detection: Evaluated Acronis True Image against 5,914 malicious executable (PE) files, each being less than two weeks old and confirmed as widespread. Files were first scanned statically to gauge initial detection, then undetected files were executed individually to test dynamic protection, and a final scan was then conducted. Acronis True Image detected 99.98% of these threats — missing just one file out of nearly 6,000 and earning 6 out of 6 points for Protection, underscoring the product’s ability to tackle even the newest malware strains.
Usability: Seamless security without the hassle
Security is only as good as its usability — nobody wants a solution that slows them down or flags legitimate files as threats. AV-TEST’s Usability category tested Acronis True Image’s impact on system usability through false positive assessments — split into static and dynamic phases:
Static False Positive Test: Acronis True Image scanned over 500,000 clean files across three sets: Windows and Office files (393,346), third-party software (78,533) and game downloads (31,448). False positives in the critical Windows / Office set could destabilize a system, so perfection here is nonnegotiable. Additionally, no issues were flagged in the gaming set.
Dynamic False Positive Test: This phase simulated real user behavior, including downloading, installing and running clean software from two sets: 20 high-priority programs (e.g., Adobe Reader, Google Chrome) and 25 default programs. Acronis True Image produced zero false positives, ensuring that workflows remain uninterrupted and legitimate actions aren’t blocked.
